Its a pretty good idea to know about the land that we live on regardless of where you are.

Kick-is-on-lo Cud was the eldest daughter of Chief Seattle. During her long life, she saw the coming of white settlers, the exile of her Duwamish and Suquamish people from their traditional lands, and the growth of the new city named for her father. She didn’t move to the Port Madison Reservation with the rest of her people, but stayed in Seattle. She earned her living doing laundry for some of Seattle’s prominent families. A white friend asked to call her “Angeline, ” and others later added “Princess.”

My cousin and my aunt posted this on facebook, to which I was compelled to start a conversation:
I don’t mean to split hairs with you here, but I just want to note that when this was written in 1892, “justice and liberty for all” did not include Natives who were then being fully legally wiped off the land by the Dawes Act in 1887. Justice and liberty also wasn’t for Free Blacks or Slaves or Mexicans or any Women and I would say that still holds true today. When it was first said in public schools it was on Columbus Day. I mean, with that history which is never taught, I’d say the pledge came out during a time that was pretty fucked up.
I love my country and my people but I’m not down with pledging allegiance to our national government… but if you want to pledge allegiance to God that’s cool, that’s all you and your relationship with God.
Out of the spirit of being perfectly honest and unafraid to offend, I had to say it.

These are a few photos from Smash it Dead on 3/29 @ the Cambridge Elks Lodge. I accidentally deleted all the other photos I have from that weekend. Normally I’d be bummed but there’s nothing I can do about it now and I’m happy that I have even a few to share. Oops! :-P
